七十年代，香港電視業發展極為迅猛，一批集合中英文化背景成長的導演、編劇、監製等專業幕後人才不斷加入影視製作行列，大大提高了電影製作的質量，使得香港電影湧現岀創作的「香港新浪潮」。香港健全的社會制度，吸引兩岸三地大批文藝工作者來到東方之珠，活躍在港產片的台前幕後。
八十年代，經濟飛躍，一方面使得市民整體精神消費額劇增，形成龐大的電影市場，另一方面也使得社會資金流動增多，大量資本投入進電影製作行業。外國影視的意識形態衝擊，香港在經濟騰飛下各種社會轉型的生活方式，豐富了香港電影的題材。一眾「新浪潮」導演如王晶、甘國亮、杜琪峰等採用各種新舊的拍攝手法，不斷大膽創作各樣新體裁的電影，擦出八十年代香港電影黃金時期的火花。不同類別的電影， 喜劇、文藝片、古裝武俠片、靈異片、動作片等匯聚一堂。
